First things first

Sometime prior to our first class I would like you to respond to the following prompts. This is just an opportunity to share a bit of yourself with me and your classmates.

What worries you?

What excites you?

What support do you need?

well the first thing the worries me is the amount of work we have in five weeks after looking at the syllabus for the first time... it looks overwhelming

something that i am looking forward to is meeting some new people from other groups

for support i like to see examples of the assignments that we need to complete... i find it very helpful to have an example to reference when working on something

Hi everyone! I really try not to worry too much so I'd like to opt out of this first question. I've been attempting to stay collected and not stress out too much during this program... so I don't want to focus on my worries.

I am looking forward to the science fair experiment we will be working on this session. Since we are all science geeks I feel comfortable saying- I love science fairs!

I agree Paul! For support I'd also like to see some examples of the completed assignments that are on our syllabus.

Off the class record- if anyone lives in the Storrs area and would like to car pool, let me know.

After looking over the syllabus, I have to agree with Paul that it looks a bit overwhelming. However, I think that if we all continue to stay organized and motivated then we won't have any trouble completeing the assignments on time.

I am excited (and a bit nervous) that we only have another 5 weeks or so before we get to start student teaching.

I agree with Allison and Paul. For support I would like to have examples to guide me through the assignments.

I'm also a bit worried about all of the assignments that are listed on the syllabus. I'm hoping that when we have the first day of class and everything is explained I'll feel a little better about everything we have to do. I'm also starting to get a bit nervous about teaching. The first 6 weeks flew by, and there's only 5 more to go...

In addition to looking forward to meeting new people, I'm really excited to just start this class in general. While all of the classes we've taken so far will be helpful in some way, I think this class and our general methods class will offer the most structure and support for our day-to-day teaching in the fall.

I definitely agree about looking at good examples of past assignments. Another support that we already have is the syllabus (thank you). Lastly, I love getting materials that I can go through at my own pace that supplement lessons...whether worksheets, labs, etc, anything like that would be very helpful.

See you all Wednesday!

Paul. If you go to http://www.taskstream.com/main/?/ceglie/ScienceMethods.html
There is a link with some samples of some of the artifacts from last year.

I like Allison am keeping focused on the positive and am trying to remain stress free. I don't really have any worries at this time.

I am excited to begin obtaining more content specific information. I enjoyed the methods course, however I found it difficult to relate to science sometimes. I am also looking forward to meeting the other science people in the program.

Like everyone else, the examples are very helpful. I would also like to obtain articles and references to things that I can study on my own time that may help with student teaching and beyond. Similar to Edward I am anxious to begin collecting things I can potentially use in the future.

I like the idea of trying not to worry about things like Allison and Zuleyka said. I am sure things will come up but right now im feeling pretty good.

I am very excited about reading different scientific books. The list looks very interesting and it will be hard to decide.

For support I think that overall just learning new and interesting ways to teach the scientific concepts will be great. The more activities, lab ideas, and instructional methods at our disposal the better. I think this will end up being something we can all create together from our various backgrounds!

See everyone Wednesday :-)

What worries me: Well to be honest after last the last session I am not worried about work because we had plenty of it from Dr. Billings. However, I do get nervous about change. I got so use to the classes and my classmates, and now it is already time to start classes with new professors, and in one class new classmates. However, change is good, it just is overwhelming at first.

What Excites Me:
Well I am excited that this program is moving by so quickly. I have already learned so much. I can not wait to learn more. I am really excited about this class because I really want to further my knowledge on how to apply science in the classroom.

What Support Do You Need:
Well my classmates from Waterbury already know that I am expecting my first daughter July 24th. This is also a very exciting time for me, however, I need strong peer support. Everyone has already been so supportive already. I may need a little help to stay ahead on my work so when she does arrive I do not fall behind.

What worries me?

The amount of work worries me but after looking through the syllabus it looks manageable and importantly exciting and interesting. If we all work together and have a positive attitude this semester will FLY by! :)

What excites me?
I am super excited about meeting all of the science students from West Hartford. Our class in Waterbury has grown very close and we have each learned a lot about one another and I hope that we will all be able to become close in our science methods class. I am also excited about this course because I will finally be taught skills that I can apply directly to the science classroom. Nastasha, Meghan, Kyle and I have already learned so much from sharing resources, it will be great to share with ALL of the students in the science methods course.

What support do you need?
The biggest aspect of support that I believe I would like to see in this course is the opportunity to discuss as a class and in groups our lesson plans, ideas for unit plans, resources for classroom activities etc. I feel as though this class will give us a great foundation of materials that we will be able to use in student teaching and in our own classroom.

I have to agree with many of you. I was a bit overwhelmed when I went over the syllabus. I'm a little worried about squeezing everything into 5 weeks.

With that said, I am also extremely excited to learn more. I had a wonderful first semester and I'm looking forward to learning more about teaching techniques and applications, particularly in science. I'm also excited to meet new people...and being a science nerd and a book lover, I'm looking forward to the NOS books.

In terms of support, I have found that collaboration amongst other classmates has been one of the best support systems so far. I really enjoy sharing ideas and working together. I also agree with the examples everyone mentioned. They have been extremely helpful in the past.

What worries me?
Just to echo everyone else, I am a bit worried about getting everything done in only 5 weeks (or 5 classes!) However, I have to agree with Nastasha- after the amount of work that came from 6 weeks of 2 classes/week with Dr. Billings, I think I will find a way to manage it all...

What excites me?
Too many things! Only commuting to West Hartford (I live in Avon), meeting new people who are excited about science, learning new ways to teach science and get students excited about it, incorporating creativity into science instruction...

Support I need?
I enjoy collaboration with classmates- I find that science is such a broad subject and we all have strengths and specific areas of expertise. I look forward to learning from everyone- esp. any human anatomy and physiology affectionados

Hello everyone. Hope I am not too late in posting. Looking forward to meet you all soon in class.

What worries me?
Well, there are two things that worries me- one the amount of work we have to do second the challenge I will be facing as a student teacher at Manchester High School.

What excites me?
Besides all my worries my observation at Mr. Foley's Biology class at Conrad High reminded me of my Biology class as a high schooler and I am really excited to be in school with students doing exciting lab work.

What support do you need?
I would like to have discussions about the assignments, unit plan, and information about teacher's resources

It seems that there are two main thoughts on the first question: either some concern over the amount of work in the syllabus, or a focus on maintaining a positive attitude. When I first looked at the syllabus, it did seem a bit overwhelming, but looking back at last semester, I had the same concern for several of the other classes, and they worked out just fine. That said, I find myself now shifting more into the second category.

I am most excited about having input that is directly targeted to the science content area. We covered a lot of good information last semester, but at times it was difficult to come up to examples where methods could be applied to physics. I'm looking forwards to seeing more examples of science methods in action.

Finally, I'm going to echo the idea of class collaboration: In the last semester, the group that I had all the classes with got pretty close and worked really well together, which made everything much more enjoyable. I'm looking forwards to working with all of you and building up a strong learning community.

I hope that I am not the last one to post. Anyhoo, let's get to it.

What worries me? Hmmmmm, interesting question. As it seems everyone is, I am worried about the workload. Three classes rather than four, but crammed into five weeks rather and six. But, I know we can all help each other through. Right?

What am I looking forward to? New ideas and new points of view. No matter how similar we all may be in our scientific minds, we all come from different places and all see things through different eyes. Always sparks good conversations.

What supports do I need? Um, not sure yet. I know that as the semester goes on, I will find out that I need some dry ground to stand on. I do know one thing I don't need, gray areas in assignments, which I feel we won't have.

After browsing several of the other comments, and as a graduate of last year's TCPCG cohort, I feel I must first say that you will all get through it. It will be stressful, but it will be worth it.

What worries me? My biggest concern in teaching is figuring out how to get students to RETAIN what they learn.

What excites me? I am very excited to learn new methods for making science class fun as well as useful to the students.

What support do I need? My intention is to work as a special education teacher, including co-teaching in science at the secondary level. I would like there to be inclusion of differentiation ideas as well as "life skills" science.

I suppose I'm worried about being able to put the amount of time I want to into this course. Five weeks will go by so quickly.

I'm looking forward to being back in the science realm.

For support, resources for the classroom are a big one. Also, advancements in science and science in the news type of resources.
